If you have a computer that you wish to recycle or dispose of, please remove any personal details including online banking details first.
Recent news reports have shown that fraudsters are able to find internet banking data stored on recycled computers and laptops.
If you dispose of a computer at your local tip or recycling centre, someone could buy that computer. Who knows what banking details they might find if decide to examine your old hard drive ?.
The data on your laptop or computer is hard to completely remove, deleting files doesn’t actually remove the data. File information is kept in a directory so that the operating system can find it. When you delete a file, all you are doing is removing it from the directory and flagging that part of the drive as being available for new data. Until that region is overwritten, the old data can be retrieved, in fact that’s how you can recover lost data.
If you are going to dispose of your computer or laptop that you have used for online banking then you should use a program to wipe your hard drives.
If you decide that you do not trust data erasure software to do it’s job then you have an alternative method. Take out the hard drive !.
If you don't have the confidence to remove the hard drive from your computer then please call me and I will do it for you while you wait.
